James Morrison In 1768, west of Philadelphia there was a man named Cornish McManus. He was in a gunsmith business. He was thirty-five years old and had been an apprentice and then an assistant to a master gunsmith, his name was John Waynewright. Cornish was a good artist. While the time working for John Waynewright Cornish never got to do anything special to the rifles. Later on Cornish opened his own business. He was doing well. One day a customer came in with his daughter. It was love at first sight. They eventually got married. She was pregnant with a baby. That meant he had to work harder to support them. One day Cornish saw this peace of wood in his pile. As soon as he saw it he thought of making a sweet rifle. A sweet rifle is a rifle that looks so artistic and shoots so accurate. He spent months and months on it. He would stay up all night in the candle light just to do it. That is part of the reasons it took him so long. Finally he was done. He went outside and shot at a log three times. He went down and checked the log. There was only one hole in the log. He thought to himself, that is impossible. He checked it again and there was three bullets in one hole. He was getting low on money and supplies. So he was forced to sell the rifle. He sold it to a guy named John Byam. Byam set off into the woods. He met up with British soldiers. They were just going to hang a man when Byam shot one of the soldiers. When the horse the man was sitting on heard the shot and ran out from underneath the man. The man died. The soldiers shot at him. One of them hit his horse. So he grabbed the sattle and got on his carrying horse. They went about a mile and came to a ravine. Cornish's horse made it cause it was so strong. The britishes horse's all fell and broke there legs. Cornish met up with these green coated men. they surrounded him. They were good guys. They were called McNary's Rangers. They asked him if he wanted to join them. Byam decided he would join there group, so he fought for them for a couple of years. In one of the battles he grew sick, then he eventually died. This women bought the rifle for her two sons that were in the war. As it turned out, the next thing she heard was that her sons both died in the war. she put in her attack. About two-hundred years later a man found it. He worked at a gas station. One day a man pulled up and saw it. The man ended up a collector of guns. He traded an Elvis picture for the Rifle. The man put the rifle on his wall. At Christmas time a kid next door was putting up things on the tree. There was a candle next to the rifle on the wall. Nobody throught after all those years to checked if the rifle was loaded, it was. The candle hit the dried up gun powder and made the rifle shoot. It went through the window of the house and through the window of the house the boy was in. It went right for his head. It hit him in the head. Before he hit the ground he was dead. The boy's mom killed herself because she was so depressed. His dad through the rifle over a bridge. A guy saw him and snagged it with a fishing rod. The dad later died in a car accident. Cornish McManus was a artistic person, who was a gunsmith. He was a very thoughtful person. He gave up his best creation for his wife and kid. John Waynewright was a average person, who was making rifles just for the money. He didn't want to experiment at all. John Byam was a wonderer, who liked to travel. He was a really good shot. Color Change Chameleon Materials For this demonstration, you start by preparing two separate solutions: Solution A 2 mg potassium permanganate500 ml distilled water Dissolve a small amount of potassium permanganate into water. The amount isnt critical, but dont use too much or else the solution will be too deeply colored to see the color changes. Use distilled water rather than tap water to avoid problems caused by salts in tap water that affect water pH and can interfere with the reaction. The solution should be a deep purple color. Solution B 6 g sugar (sucrose)10 g sodium hydroxide (NaOH)750 ml distilled water Dissolve the sugar and sodium hydroxide in the water. The reaction between sodium hydroxide and water is exothermic, so expect some heat to be produced. This will be a clear solution. First, the permanangate ion (purple in solution) is reduced to form the manganate ion (green in solution): MnO4- e- → MnO42- As the reaction is proceeding, both the purple permanganate and green manganate are present, blending together to produce a solution that appears blue. Eventually, there is more green manganate, yielding a green solution. Next, the green manganate ion is further reduced and forms manganese dioxide: MnO42- 2 H2O 2 e- → MnO2 4 OH- Manganese dioxide is golden brown solid, but the particles are so small they make the solution appear to change color. Planned parenthood is a luxury to the new generation. When our parents had children, it was not a decision; it was a moral â€Å"duty† to society. To further analyze the individual factors of planned parenthood you must draw on the larger religious, social, and economic factors that guide your individual decisions (Mills, 1959). If one considers the broad social factors that shape, influence, and allow individual choices, you are using what C. Wright Mill’s called the Sociological Imagination (Appelbaum and Chambliss, 1997). The insight provided by the Sociological Imagination brings new understanding to this particular event, the planning of parenthood. The choice to bare children was never a topic for conversation in past generations. Religion as an institution had greater influence than it does in modern society. Families of the past were expected to follow religious teaching and were manipulated by the sociological expectations of the family definition. Birth control and abortion were â€Å"taboo† and social norms demonstrated the influence of religion in society. Nowadays abortion clinics are common ground and â€Å"the pill† is the topic in high school settings. Due to today’s norms, most people are not following the old religious standards of â€Å"go forth and multiply†; they have new wants and desires. Religious beliefs that were the core of cultural values became second to scientific research and renovation. The focus of society shifted from the unknown and unexplained to the known and scientifically proven. Technology and medicine modernized sociological institutions; what was â€Å"taboo† became the social norm. The possibility of genetic testing, the development of the birth control pill, and government legislation of â€Å"pro-choice† allow individuals to have choices on parenthood. Technology, which we cannot control as individuals, creates individualism, free will, and personal disclosure from what was once considered a social â€Å"duty† or basic â€Å"human nature.† Social roles of men and women have a deep impact on personal decisions as well. Society expected men and women to get married, have children, and live a healthy life as husband and wife. Parenthood was not an option; it was a task in fulfilling your â€Å"social role† (Appelbaum and Chambliss, 1997). Men were â€Å"bread winners† and women â€Å"house makers† united by the family  institution. The role of men was to provide the family with comfortable living resources and protect them from harm. They were rough, tough, and above all, had the education to succeed in the workforce. Women were the heart of the family, the nurtures, the caregivers, the mothers and wives. They were neglected the educational resources needed to succeed in the workforce and the bare thought of a working mother was absurd. Now, with the high standards of family life, women are likely to work in order to provide additional family income. Economically, a child is a large strain on finances. This has a large impact on the decision to bear a child. In the past, large families were normal because children were also providers of income; therefore, a large family meant economic security. The family worked to fulfill family needs not family wants. Working-class families did not have the economic opportunity of extra disposable income; they did not have â€Å"luxuries†. The foundation of the family was hard work and unity. Women worked hard in the kitchen, men in the field, and children with household tasks. Parenthood was not an option; it was an extra source of income and survival. Social structures have given way to personal choice. Planned parenthood is the result of structural renovation. One can now sit down and discuss the meaning of being a parent without feeling society’s pressure to have a child. The Sociological Imagination enables us to â€Å"grasp at the relationship between our lives as individuals and the larger forces that help shape them† (Appelbaum, 2001). It is the interplay of larger social forces that shape the choices individuals make. The decision to bare a child is the result of social-historical renovation that provides us with the notion that we have some control over our fate. Planned parenthood is now an individual choice, not a sociological expectation.
